Biosphere 2 covers 3.15 acres,and is sealed off from Earth below by a 500-ton welded stainless steel liner. Many instruments constantly monitor the air, soil and water. It contains five biomes (a self-sustaining community of living organisms); a rainforest, a desert, a savanna, a marsh and ocean and was created to better understand Biosphere 1, Earth.
