So far, what do we think of Arizona? In spite of the fact that we inadvertently picked the winter with the worst weather the south western states have had in years to begin our exploration, we have really enjoyed being here and totally understand why so many “Snowbirds” choose this place for their winter homes. With only a week or so left before we mosey east, we realize there is so much more to see in Arizona. Phil and I know we’ll be back again someday to experience more of Mother Nature’s wild and wonderful bounty in this beautiful state. The lasting impression we will take away from Arizona is so completely different than either of us believed possible before we came down here. As far as we knew Arizona was desert … flat, lifeless and hot with that one Grand Canyon in the northwest corner we knew we’d miss this time through. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There ARE vast plains of flat land covered with minimally apparent vegetation and as everyone on the planet knows, in the summer Arizona sizzles. But, as we’ve traveled we’ve passed over, beside and around many more mountains than we ever imagined … both small and tall. Jagged, rocky peaks as well as dense Pine forests; flat topped rims dusted with snow wrapping around lush green valleys; high deserts and valley deserts alive with animals and vegetation. Driving the highways of Arizona we’ve seen multiple types of cacti turning green before our eyes, showing delightful signs of new growth and many have already started to flower or are on the verge of bursting into bloom. Blossoming wildflowers are everywhere showing flashes and splashes of yellow, pink, purple and red. In a few weeks, the desert will be a riot of color! What a wonderful surprise and yes, we will return!
