The cornerstone of the Tennessed State Capitol, a Greek Revival building was laid on July 4th 1845. It features a central square tower with a circular cupola on top rising 198 feet. Standing much as it did when finished in 1859, the graceful structure was designed by architect William Strickland who died suddenly during construction in 1854. He is buried in the north face of the Capitol. The grounds contain statues honoring Sam Davis, Sgt. Alvin York, and Presidents Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. Also on the grounds are the tombs of President and Mrs. James K. Polk.
